West of the California coast were the Channel Islands. To the south was Catalina, but there was also San Clemente and San Nicolas; to the north and west was Santa Rosa and her bleak brother Miguel. Off Ventura were the ones we knew best: Santa Cruz, green in spring, rolling, pastoral, and its inhospitable companion, Anacapa, a black serrated knife edge.
